STEERING / DRUMMING

Sound Performance

2013

Philippe-Aubert Gauthier

June 10th 2013, Suoni Per Il Popolo organized a special sound performance evening: "Homemade sound systems". For this night, the artists, Stéphane Claude, Hélène Prévost and Philippe-Aubert Gauthier presented works using custom sound systems that were part of the performance. Philippe-Aubert Gauthier presented "Steering / Drumming" using a16-channel beamformer originally built in 2007 for an installation. For "Homemade sound system" at Eastern Bloc, Gauthier explored the acoustical beamformer to acoustically scan the room and interact with reflecting surface based on delay-and-sum beamforming with Pure-Data. Inspired by the popular image of follow spots and stage lights, "Steering / Drumming" was made from typical electronic music and dance culture sound sources: a Roland TR-808 transformed in a multichannel and spatialized drone box, and analog modular synthesizers. The pictures show the setup in the afternoon. Check video documentation for sound and visual excerpts. Thanks to Eastern Bloc, Suoni, Stéphane Claude, Hélène Prévost, and Tanya St-Pierre.
